In a match that could well be the turning point of their season, Grammar delivered a spirited all-round performance to defeat Mannofield by 26 runs in a tense affair that ebbed and flowed at Rubislaw. The victory not only lifts Grammar’s morale but also reasserts their credentials as a side capable of fighting back when their backs are against the wall.
Keith and Bashir Lay the Foundation
Put into bat on the fairly reliable astro surface, Grammar’s innings was built on the solid shoulders of Alex Keith and Rasib Bashir, who stitched together a crucial 100-run opening stand. Keith, the more patient of the two, played the anchor role with a gritty 54 off 91 balls, showing immense discipline against Mannofield’s probing new-ball attack.
At the other end, Bashir was fluent and aggressive, striking eight boundaries in his 48 off 54 balls, punishing anything short or wide. Their partnership not only blunted the new ball but also set the tone for a competitive total.
However, once Bashir fell to a full toss from the wily Clark Cameron, Grammar’s innings wobbled. Three quick wickets — including the dismissals of Swiergon and dDCosta — saw them slump from 100 for 0 to 118 for 3.
Middle-Order Stumble, But Bedaar and Hassaan Rally
The middle order struggled to maintain momentum. Morrison and Upadhyaya fell cheaply, and Grammar looked in danger of squandering their strong start. But Salman Bedaar played a vital hand under pressure, scoring a brisk 31 off 32 balls, rotating the strike well and finding the gaps.
Stand in Captain Hassaan then added a late flourish with a quickfire 13 not out off 10 balls, including two boundaries in the final over, pushing Grammar to a respectable 202 for 7 from their 40 overs.
Mannofield’s Chase Undone by Early Strikes
Mannofield’s reply got off to a disastrous start. Grammar’s captain Hassaan led from the front with the ball, removing both openers — Tahir caught high by Upadhyaya and Saraswat — in a fiery opening spell, the ball to bowl Saraswat as good as you are likely to see . When Shedbal fell to a sharp return catch by Bashir, Mannofield were reeling at 18 for 3. Grammar in control but well aware that they had Masterblasters on the same score just a few weeks ago.
The visitors found hope in a composed partnership between Kirodian (53 off 63) and Cameron (30 off 46). Kirodian, in particular, looked assured, driving fluently and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Their 92-run stand brought Mannofield back into the contest.
But just as the chase seemed to be stabilising, Grammar struck back.
Bin Khalid’s Game-Changing Spell
Enter Sameer Bin Khalid. The right-arm seamer turned the match on its head with a devastating spell of 4/32, removing Kirodian with his 1st ball, a rank long hop that the batter miscued straight to the grateful Bashir at midwicket. In the same over the up till nopw resolute Cameron attempted a reverse ramp and was bowled middle stump as Grammar roared back into the contest. He claimed the wickets of Saraswat caught and bowled and then Swiergon pouched a chance on the cover boundary as Grammar took control. Overall, his ability to extract bounce and movement under pressure proved decisive.
With the middle order dismantled, Mannofield’s lower order had too much to do. Despite a brief cameo from Sood (15 off 9), the required rate climbed steeply. Grammar though the match could be gone when the ever dangerous Sood was grassed by Bin Khalid who had looked confident under the skier but couldn’t hang on. Hassaan returned to clean up Sood with his 1st ball in the next over, a laser sharp yorker doing the business and finish with 3/16, capping off a captain’s performance.
Mannofield eventually limped to 176/9, falling 26 runs short. With Grammar being under sever pressure to find a win, they showed excellent belief. The players showed great heart, especially after the middle-order collapse. It was a massive win is not just for the points, but for the teams confidence.
