In a match that had everything—grit, collapses, counterattacks, controversy, and a nail-biting finish— Knight Riders emerged victorious over Grammar by 3 wickets, chasing down a target of 210 with 11 balls to spare. The contest, played on a sun-drenched afternoon at Rubislaw, was a showcase of Grade 1, the good bad and the plain ugly.
Aberdeen Grammar, after being put in to bat, posted a competitive 209/5 in their 40 overs, thanks to a captain’s knock from Agha Haider and a solid middle-order partnership with Rob Swiergon. In reply, Knight Riders overcame early setbacks and a disciplined bowling attack to reach 213/7 in 38.1 overs, with Chaudhari and Kuppathil holding their nerve in the final overs.
Grammar Innings – 209/5 (40 Overs)
Aberdeen Grammar’s innings began cautiously. Openers Keith and Bashir were watchful against the new ball, particularly against the probing lines of Chaudhari and Balasubramanian. The outfield was quick, but the pitch offered just enough movement to keep the bowlers interested.
Keith, not always known for his patience, struggled to rotate the strike and eventually fell for 13 off 40 balls, caught at point trying to force the pace. Bashir, more fluent, struck three crisp boundaries before pulling to square leg for 15.
At 41/2 in the 11th over, Grammar were in a spot of bother. Enter Agha Haider, the Grammar skipper, and Rob Swiergon, the dependable No. 4. What followed was a masterclass in rebuilding an innings. Haider was fluent from the outset, driving with elegance and punishing anything short. Swiergon played the perfect foil, rotating the strike and absorbing pressure.
Their 109-run partnership was the backbone of the innings. Haider brought up his half-century in 55 balls and looked set for a big one. He eventually fell for 67 (71 balls, 10 fours), caught at deep midwicket trying to accelerate.
Swiergon followed soon after for 43 (68 balls), caught behind off Kumarasamy, who bowled with guile and control.
With the score at 158/4 in the 34th over, Grammar needed a strong finish. Aavash Upadhyaya chipped in with a brisk 17, including a towering six over long-on, before being run out in a mix-up.
The final flourish came from Hassaan, who smashed 28 off just 18 balls, including a six and three boundaries. His cameo lifted Grammar past 200, finishing at 209/5—a total that looked competitive but not unassailable.

Knight Riders Innings – 213/7 (38.1 Overs)
Chasing 210, Knight Riders got off to a shaky start. Mohan and Kumarasamy both looked promising but fell in quick succession. Kumarasamy was caught behind for 11, and Mohan was bowled by Hassaan for 18.
The pressure mounted when Arumugam Vijandiran was dismissed for a 12-ball duck, leaving Knight Riders reeling at 39/3. The innings was steadied by Siva Palaniappan and Balasubramanian, who added 55 runs for the fourth wicket. Palaniappan initially played a cautious knock, while Balasubramanian counterattacked with flair, hitting six boundaries in his 42 off 34 balls.
However, both fell in quick succession—Palaniappan caught in ridiculous fashion one handed on the boundary by the majestic Bashir, and Balasubramanian caught at midwicket—leaving the game delicately poised at 104/5.
With the required rate climbing, Raghavendra and Bhatia stitched together a crucial 52-run stand. Raghavendra’s 26 off 39 was vital, but it was Bhatia’s 38 off 47 that kept the chase alive.
When both fell within 25 runs of the target, Grammar sensed an opening. But Chaudhari (24* off 24) and Kuppathil (17* off 14) held their nerve, rotating the strike smartly and punishing loose deliveries.
The winning moment came in the 39th over when Kuppathil drove a full delivery through extra cover for four, sealing a memorable win. Overall Grammar were not helped by their ever increasing injury list with Hassan, Mappleback and Bedaar all going down with injuries leaving the bowling options limited.
