Swiergon Masterclass Cracks Crescent

Grammar secured a thrilling three-wicket victory over Crescent at Bogbeath Park to keep their survival hopes alive, albeit the 3rd win in 4 still left them in the relegation places. Grammar were able to chase down a target of 200 with just 10 balls to spare, thanks to a magnificent unbeaten 91 from Rob Swiergon. After winning the toss, Grammar opted to field first and produced a disciplined bowling performance but dreadful catching performance, shelling 7 opportunities but did restrict Crescent to 199/9 in their 40 overs. Despite early setbacks in their chase, Grammar’s middle and lower order held firm, with Swiergon anchoring the innings and Prasanth Poosappadi providing a composed finish playing as a specialist batsman.

Crescent posted a total of 199/9 in 40 overs, but the story of their innings was as much about Grammar’s missed opportunities as it was about the runs scored. A total of seven catches were dropped by Grammar’s fielders, three of them reprieving the dangerous Rafiullah Shairzad, who went on to score a blistering 61 off 47 balls, including five fours and four sixes.

Shairzad was first dropped on 12, then again on 28 and 45—each time giving Grammar a chance to halt his momentum. His aggressive strokeplay punished the bowlers and threatened to take the game away from the visitors. The missed chances allowed him to anchor the innings through the middle overs and push the scoring rate when it mattered most.

The fielding woes didn’t stop there. Rob Swiergon, who would later redeem himself with the bat, was responsible for two of the seven dropped catches. To his credit, Swiergon showed remarkable mental resilience, putting the errors behind him and producing a match-winning innings later in the day. His ability to reset and focus on the task ahead was a testament to his character and leadership. His change of headwear also seemed to revive him.

Despite the lapses in the field, Aberdeen Grammar’s bowlers stuck to their plans. Agha Haider was the standout, claiming 3/37 and breaking through the middle order. Muhammad Tanvir and Aavash Upadhyaya each picked up two wickets, while Salman Bedaar and Harry Mapplebeck chipped in with one apiece, Mapplebeck striking with the very 1st ball of the game.

The innings had its moments of control for Grammar, especially when they reduced Crescent to 18/2 early on. But the dropped catches allowed the hosts to rebuild and post a competitive total. Vinoth Ramalingam (41 off 70) and Hari Konda (19 off 17) provided valuable support, while Rana Ahmed and Gowtham Kuppusamy added late runs to push the total close to 200.

Ultimately, the fielding lapses could have cost Grammar the match and it looked that it would when they slumped to 41 for 4. Against variable bowling, Grammar’s top order faltered early, losing Alex Keith (3), Geoff Morrison (18), Harold Mapplebeck (9) and Agha Haider (2) cheaply. At 41/4, the chase looked precarious. However, Swiergon’s calm presence at the crease turned the tide. He paced his innings perfectly, rotating strike and punishing loose deliveries. Aavash Upadhyaya added a brisk 20 with two towering sixes but fell trying for a 3rd, and Poosappadi’s 26 not out ensured Grammar crossed the line in the 39th over. It was a top effort from Prash who is unable to bowl due to injury but helped the side out as a batsman and his coolness was critical to the win.

Swiergon produced a masterclass in controlled aggression. He was particularly effective against spin and medium pace, sweeping superbly whenever bowlers dropped short or strayed onto his pads, and driving with elegance and precision when they overpitched. His timing through the covers and down the ground was impeccable. Swiergon struck 12 boundaries in his unbeaten 91 off 89 balls, finishing with a strike rate of 102.25—a remarkable effort under pressure and almost single handely won the game.

Crescent’s bowlers fought hard, with Saraj and Ahmed picking up two wickets each. However, 24 extras—including 19 wides—proved costly in a low-margin game. The match was a showcase of resilience and composure under pressure, with Grammar’s ability to recover from early setbacks proving decisive. Grammar reamin up against it and next face high flying Knightriders at Rubislaw.

Man of the Match: Rob Sweirgon for a brilliant unbeaten 91 that won the game, it was deserving of a century.
