Swiergon and Tanvir Craft Great Grammar Escape

Grammar produced a stunning performance to secure a massive victory over Gordonians in a high-stakes encounter that decided the fate of both teams in the league. With relegation looming, Grammar had to win and and they delivered in style.

The match was headlined by Robert Swiergon’s maiden century for the club, a fluent and commanding 108 off 99 balls, capping off a prolific season in which he amassed 641 runs. His innings was the backbone of Grammar’s imposing total of 275/6 in 40 overs.

In reply, Gordonians faltered under pressure, crumbling to 163/7, thanks to a deadly spell from Tanvir, who claimed 5 wickets, and a series of top-class catches by Prasanth Poosappadi, Geoff Morrison, and Agha Haider that turned the tide decisively in Grammar’s favour.

This victory not only saved Grammar from relegation but also consigned Gordonians to the drop, making it one of the most consequential matches in recent  history.

Swiergon’s 108 was a masterclass in controlled aggression. His timing, placement, and shot selection were impeccable. This century was the culmination of a season where he scored 641 runs, making him one of the league’s standout performers. After Morrison and the in form Salman Bedaar had put on 41 for the 1st wicket, they promptly fell to 56 for 2, Morrison adjudged caught at the wicket and Bin Khalid out LBW as Singh picked up two wickets. Bedaar was joined by Swiergon and they battered 105 in good time, Bedaar hitting 70 from 73 with 12 fours. Haider cracked a quick 24 as Grammar reached 227 and a late flurry from Hasaan (27 from 16) helped lift Grammar towards a huge score. Swiergon reached his ton from 89 balls with 16 fours and a six. He had time for another six but was stumped for 108 late on. Hassaan was also stumped as Grammar finished on a strong total.

Looking for early wickets and knowing the weather was likely to come into play, Grammar made a dream start, having been flayed for six, Tanvir adjusted his line and Sultan could only sky his next big hit, where Haider took a well judged catch. Prash then took the catch of the season one handed at cover and Morrison brilliantly caught Hussain down the leg side as Tanvir ripped through the top order, the home side in trouble at 42 for 3. They were soon all but beaten as Tanvir removed Emon, who hit a ball a long way up but not too far forward and Morrison caught it comfortably. Prash then produced another stunner 2 balls later, diving forward at cover to pouch Khosla for a duck, the man that had flayed Grammar last time out.

Tanvir’s spell of 7-0-42-5 was devastating. He bowled with real precision, dismantling Gordonians’ top order and ensuring Grammar’s total was well defended. Haider, Javaid, Bedaar and Prash tightened the screw and Haider took a good caught and bowled to see off Bhalani and then Javaid got Devedas plating on. Bhide made a fine 50 but Gordonians needed more than 10 an over with rain falling. The teams continued for a few more overs but it became too wet and Grammar closed out a DLS win.

This win was more than just twenty points—it was a lifeline. Grammar’s season had been challenging, b, but this performance showed resilience, unity, and class. The result meant Grammar avoided relegation, while Gordonians were relegated, a dramatic reversal of fortunes. In the 2nd half of the season Grammar have won 7 games and this has been the difference maker. Bedaar’s all round form with bat and ball have been pivotal and Rob Swiergon’s batting top class. Saturday also showed that catches do indeed win matches.

Gordonians also played the game in a great spirit and will be missed in Grade 1 as are a good side who have been hampered by the loss of a gras pitch this season and therefore a number of players. If they keep their current side together, they are likely to be very strong in Grade 2.

Man of the Match
Rob Swiergon for his well deserved ton, but Tanvir, Prash and Bedaar played pivotal roles.
